Do These 3 Things to Show Up on Top of Google

Hi, it's Tee.

I look at a lot of local businesses on Google every week. Plumbers, HVAC companies, restaurants, salons, contractors across the DMV. Most of them are missing the same three things. None of them cost money, and you can fix all three in an afternoon.

1. Fix your Google categories and services

Your Google Business Profile has a main category and up to a few extra ones. This is one of the biggest ranking factors you control. Most people either pick too many or pick the wrong one.

Pick one main category that matches what you want to be found for. Add zero to three more, only if they describe real work you do. When two categories overlap, you water down the power of each. When one drifts away from what you actually sell, it does the same.

Then fill in the services section. List every service you offer, and write a short description for your top ones. Google reads this to decide which searches you belong in. A plumber who lists drain cleaning, water heater repair and sewer line inspection shows up for all three. A plumber who lists "plumbing" shows up for one.

Quick check: search your main service plus your city, then look at the top three results. Open their profiles and compare their categories and service lists to yours.

2. Put your service and city in your website title

The title tag is the blue line people see in the Google result. It is also one of the first things Google reads on your page. Most small business sites use something like "Home" or "Welcome to Smith Plumbing." That tells Google nothing.

Write it like this: your main service, your city, your business name, a few of your main services, and "near me" if there is room. For example:

BEST HVAC Contractor Bowie MD | Smith Heating & Air | Furnace Repair and AC Installation Near Me

It looks long, and that is fine. Google shows what it needs. Your main headline on the page should say the same thing in a shorter form, like "HVAC Contractor in Bowie, MD." Your name, address and phone number should be in the footer and match your Google profile word for word.

3. Get reviews on a steady schedule

Reviews tell Google that real people use your business. The number matters, and so does how recent they are. Ten reviews from three years ago looks like a business that went quiet.

Ask every customer, right after the job, while they are happy. Send them a direct link so they do not have to hunt for it. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a normal human voice. Make this a habit that happens weekly, not a push you do once.

Here is what this looks like in real life. A deck builder in Maryland, Elite Decks & Patios, started at number 114 on Google Maps for "deck builder near me." After we worked on their local optimization, they moved into the top 3 map results for that search. Same business, same work. Google just finally understood what they do and where.

What to expect

These changes work together. Categories and services tell Google what you do. Your title and headline tell it where you do it. Reviews tell it that people trust you. Google usually needs a few weeks to a few months to move you, depending on how crowded your area is.

If you want to know where you stand today, we run a free audit that shows how you rank in your area and what is holding you back. You can also read how our local SEO work gets businesses into the top 3 on Google Maps across Prince George's County and the rest of the DMV.
