How to Rank Your Local Business at the Top of Google for Free
Hi, it's Tee.
You can rank on Google without paying for ads. It costs time instead of money, and it works best when you do the steps in order. Here is the full process we use, written so you can do it yourself.
How Google decides who goes on top
Google says local results come down to three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what the person searched. Distance is how close you are to them. Prominence is how well known and trusted you are, which comes from reviews, links and mentions around the web. You cannot change where you are. You can improve the other two.
Step 1: Claim and fully fill out your Google Business Profile
Search your business name. If you see a panel on the right with "Own this business?", claim it and verify it. Then fill in everything: name, address, phone, website, hours, categories, services, description, and a link for appointments or contact. Profiles that are fully filled out beat half empty ones.
Step 2: Make your name, address and phone the same everywhere
Google compares your information across your website, your profile and other directories. If you are "Smith Plumbing LLC" in one place and "Smith Plumbing" in another, that creates doubt. Pick one version and copy it exactly.
Step 3: Add photos every week
Real photos of your work, your team and your location. A steady stream of new photos signals an active business. Skip stock images, because customers can tell.
Step 4: Collect reviews and answer them
Ask after every job. Send a direct link. Reply to each one. Google weighs the number of reviews, how recent they are and the star rating, and so do your customers.
Step 5: Build a website that says what you do and where
Your homepage title and main headline should have your service and city. Then give each main service its own page, and each area you serve its own page. A plumber in Silver Spring can have a page for water heater repair and a page for Silver Spring. These pages should be useful and specific to your area, not copied with a different city name. Link them to each other so a visitor can move around easily. If you need help here, our web design team builds sites this way.
Step 6: Get listed on the main directories
Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and Foursquare are the big ones. Use the same name, address and phone as everywhere else. These listings back up what your profile says.
Step 7: Check where you actually rank
Ranking is different on every block. You might be number one in your own neighborhood and invisible two miles away. A map grid report shows how you rank across your area, and it is the best way to see progress.
A remodeler in Prince George's County is a good example. They were not on page 1 for "kitchen remodeling Lanham MD." After we worked on their local optimization, they reached number 2 on Google for that search, and they did it without spending a dollar on ads.
Free does not mean fast
Expect weeks, not days. Competitive categories in busy areas like Montgomery County take longer than quiet ones. The people who win are the ones who keep going every week. If you would rather have our local SEO service handle it for you, contact us and we will show you where you stand first.
