Local SEO vs Google Ads: What's the Difference?

Hi, it's Tee.

Both local SEO and Google Ads get you in front of people who are searching for what you sell. People mix them up all the time, and that leads to money spent in the wrong place. Here is the plain version.

What each one is

Local SEO is the work that gets you into the map results and the regular results for free. You earn the spot by improving your Google profile, your reviews and your website.

Google Ads is where you pay to appear at the top, labeled "Sponsored." You bid on searches and pay when someone clicks.

Side by side

  • Speed: Ads can start bringing calls within days. Local SEO takes weeks to months.
  • Cost: Ads cost money for every click, as long as they run. SEO costs time or a monthly fee, and the results keep building.
  • Staying power: When you turn off ads, the calls stop. A strong local ranking keeps working while you sleep.
  • Trust: Many people skip the sponsored results and click the map results or the first organic results. A top 3 map spot often earns the click.
  • Control: Ads let you pick the exact search, location and time of day. SEO gives you less control over exactly when you appear.

So which one first?

If you need calls this month, start with ads. A heating company going into winter, a landscaper with a slow week, a restaurant opening a new location, all of these can use the speed.

If you are building a business that should be steady for years, start local SEO now. It takes time, so the best moment to begin is today.

If you can, do both. Ads bring calls while your SEO climbs. Once you rank in the top 3 on the map, you can often spend less on ads and keep the same flow of calls.

Two mistakes to avoid

Sending ad clicks to a weak page. The ad gets the click, and the page loses the customer. Make the page match the ad and put your phone number at the top.

Quitting SEO too early. Many people stop after a month because nothing happened yet. Rankings move slowly, and then they move all at once.

We have seen what SEO alone can do. A DC contractor of ours went from 0 of 6 target searches on page 1 to 4 of 6 in 12 weeks, with no ads at all. The work was a full Google profile rebuild, schema and local citations. Ads would have brought calls faster, and SEO is why that business now gets found for free.

We run the paid side too. For a remodeling contractor we work with in Maryland, we have been running Google Local Services Ads for the past 7 days. Those ads sit above everything else on the page, and you pay per lead instead of per click. In that time they brought in 6 paid leads, 5 phone calls and 1 message, from homeowners around the county looking for remodeling work, at about $225 per lead. For a job worth thousands of dollars, a lot of contractors would take that deal. That is why we like pairing ads with free rankings: the ads bring calls now while the rankings build.

Where Meta Ads fit

Google catches people who are already searching. Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) reach people who were not searching yet but would buy if they saw you. They work for some businesses and not others. We cover when they are worth it on our Meta Ads page.
